Lawrence E Cummings, 87, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at East Liverpool City Hospital.  Larry was born on December 28, 1933, in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Muriel Lucretia (Farr) Cummings and Lawrence B. Cummings.

Larry attended Cheverus High School and graduated from St. Francis High School in Biddeford, ME.  From 1952-1955, Larry served as Staff Sergeant with the United States Army 45th Infantry Division in Korea and Board 4 in Ft. Bliss, TX.

He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Texas and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Georgia in 1976.  Larry was a high school teacher with Jesuit High School in El Paso, TX.  While there, he also coached basketball for five years.  Larry then became a teacher and a community relations officer for the federal prison system with assignments in Tallahassee, FL, and New Orleans, LA.  He began a university teaching career in 1972 at Texas Tech University, emphasizing the Criminal Justice area of study.  From 1976-1996, Larry taught criminal justice at Youngstown State University, serving as Professor, Department Chair, and Special Assistant to the Dean of the College.  Until his death, he was recognized as professor emeritus at YSU.  Special honors were awarded to Larry in 1988 with the presentation of the Youngstown State University Watson Award and the 2012 Youngstown State University Dean’s Appreciation Award.  Throughout his career, Larry provided numerous scholarly presentations and publications.

An entrepreneur, Larry operated several small businesses throughout his life.  These included ELK Excavation, Snowhill Farm, Evergreen Lawn Maintenance, and the Ink Spot Refills.

Larry’s community service included board president, Help Hotline; board president, Mahoning County Community Corrections Association; board member, Louis Tobin Multi-County Juvenile Attention System; chair, FCI Elkton Community Relations Committee, board member, Forensic Psychiatric Center of District XI member.  He was also a member of the Tri-County Korean War Veterans Association.

Larry is survived by: his wife of 45 years, Patricia Baumgarner, whom he married in 1976; 11 children: Michael (Brenda) Cummings, of Prosper, TX; Elizabeth Dole, of Flowermound, TX; Ruth Cummings, of Austin, TX; Jane Tate, of Round Rock, TX; James (Tammy) Cummings, of Austin, TX; Gail (Chuck) Gray, of Oak Grove, KY; Greer Ann (Duane DeBolt) Cummings, of San Antonio, TX; Patricia (Chuck Pinnell) Cummings, of Austin, TX; Katherine (Robert) Alden, of Austin, TX; Laura (Jessica Falkner) Cummings, of Petersburg, OH; and Gregory (Kayla Heard) Cummings, of Akron, OH.  Larry is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  Larry also leaves behind his sister, Penny Joyce, and brother, Peter Cummings.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 16th from 1PM-3PM at the Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists- Martin Chapel in Calcutta.  The funeral service will follow at 3PM with Reverend Joseph Boyd from The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown officiating.  In connection to the COVID-19 public health crisis, masks are encouraged.

The family has requested that memorial tributes take the form of donations to the Dr. John J. Yemma, Sr. Memorial Scholarship at the Youngstown State University Foundation, 655 Wick Avenue, Youngstown, OH  44502
