Mrs. Beaver and I went to school together...often! She was my Sunday School teacher and then we were in New Testament Survey class at Wheeling Jesuit University together! While we differed in age, we shared the Christian faith and we sat in a classroom filled with students who (mostly) did not care about the content. The professor cared in such a different way: he was a self-proclaimed atheist who had studied the NT simply for its "literary value." My, it's an understatement to say that he didn't really understand Mrs. Beaver's and my reverence for the books! After he surveyed the class and found that we were the only two enrolled who not only believed the words of the NT and in the God of the NT--we also took it quite literally and seriously--he dived in! I can't say he tried to change our perspectives although I bet he thought he was going to be able to do that! No, he tried to convince us that we were unenlightened and naive, simplistic to the point of being unintellectual...and so on. To summarize, we fascinated him! I was so glad to have a fellow believer in that class with me! I was a freshman and I don't really know how I would have survived without her support! Mrs. Beaver and I started out as teacher-Sunday School student, progressed to college classmates, and ended up simply friends. She was a great mentor to me. I value her contribution to my spiritual health! She will be missed!
